The Craft Behind a Clean Instrument

A proper cleaning is more than making an instrument look new. It is an opportunity to understand the instrument, care for every component, and return it to the player in a condition worthy of its craftsmanship.

Every instrument begins with a thorough inspection. Before anything is disassembled, its construction, condition, and individual characteristics are assessed so the cleaning process can be tailored to the instrument rather than treated as a one-size-fits-all service.

From there, the instrument is completely disassembled - down to the smallest screws, springs, linkages, and fittings. Every component is thoroughly degreased and individually assessed, while the instrument, slides, and valves receive additional service to remove buildup and contamination from areas routine cleaning cannot reach. After cleaning, each component is properly neutralized to help protect the instrument and support its long-term health.

Reassembly is where patience becomes precision. Components are carefully fitted, slides and valves are aligned, and adjustments are made to ensure everything moves and operates as it should. If dirt or contamination is discovered anywhere during assembly, the component is not simply wiped and accepted - it goes back through the cleaning process.

For instruments receiving polishing, an additional degreasing is performed afterward to remove polishing residue and ensure the finished instrument is truly clean rather than simply clean-looking.

Once assembled, the instrument is brought to a functional standard through a final inspection of slides, valves, alignment, and overall operation. A brief playing test follows to provide one final opportunity to ensure the instrument responds and functions as expected.

The result is not simply a cleaner instrument. It is an instrument that has been carefully examined, thoroughly cleaned, precisely assembled, and prepared to be played again.

The registers feel much more consistent, slurs are much easier, and the low register is a LOT better.
